A really fun thing to do as a new parent is selecting a new toy for your child and watching them explore and play with it. But when you're standing in the toy aisle or spending an evening on a google hunt, the fast number of choices available and points to consider can be quite overwhelming.
What is appropriate for my baby’s age? Is it safe to use? Will it support their development?
Here are 5 tips we have found helpful to consider when choosing a toy for your little one.
1. They are safe to use
First things first – you want a toy to be safe. Keep an eye out for safety warnings on toys and age-appropriate indicators. Carefully check the item before giving it to your child to play with. Avoid anything with sharp edges, potential choking hazards, loose details.
2. They match babies developmental stage
We often naturally do this, but it makes sense to check if the toy is age-appropriate and baby can interact with it. I’m sure we can agree your child is a genius, but objects that are too complicated can easily frustrate and demotivate. Soft toys, rattles, plush animals and stacking rings are great stimulation for young babies. At the same time your 3-year-old might not get overly excited by a rattle and it won’t keep their attention for very long. Our Little Hoppa 3-in-1 has been designed to transition between those different developmental stages without you having to buy a new item.
3. They inspire your baby
Babies love everything that blinks and makes a sound but sometimes it’s more beneficial for them to engage with something that sparks their imagination. Coloured wooden building blocks are a versatile choice that can be kept and enjoyed for years. Playing and building with stackable toys help children develop hand-eye coordination and motor skills. Toddlers can also learn about balance, shapes and textures as well as developing their creativity. We love Matchstick Monkeys new wooden Safari Jeep, which has so many ways to play!
4. They are made from quality materials
Quality materials are another important safety feature but also benefit their longevity and are kinder to the environment. BPA-free materials are preferable and it always a good idea to sense check if the item is washable or can be easily cleaned.
In a sea of plastic toys, those made of wood or other renewable materials are a sustainable choice we should consider. Plus, it is often more pleasing on the adult eye! For Sofie, the creator of our Little Hoppa, those were key points when designing the Wooden Baby Bouncer. A sturdy quality can also be the more price conscious investment in the long run as it can be used for years and passed on to siblings or even the next generation. And isn’t that creating beautiful memories!
5. Think outside the box
Finally, not every toy has to be labelled as one! You might end up buying an item and the cardboard box it comes in is the real hero. And that’s just as great – let your imagination run wild together, get your crayons and start creating!September 25, 2023
